Authentic Cantonese Cuisine, fully licensed, take out services
A story of Yang Sheng
Forty years ago, the original owner (after running a Vancouver restaurant of the same name), opened the Yang Sheng in Ottawa. On offer then were the Cantonese dishes that North Americans have loved for so long—the likes of sweet and sour spareribs, for instance, and black pepper beef.
Nowadays, to keep up with changing tastes, present restaurateur Sam Fung has tweaked the menu to include Szechuan dishes, even Thai.
Between Yang Sheng’s two dining rooms is a dark wooden opening carved with sinuous dragons. Down the second room is a golden relief of a dragon facing a phoenix. According to long-held Chinese understanding, dragons represent great strength to come: pairing them with the mythical bird denotes a tranquil marriage. Meanwhile, in the window hang sides of BBQ pork and whole ducks—no symbolic meaning here, simply good Cantonese eating!
