Cool ambient music. Funky 70s and 80s décor—check out the humongous red scooped-out ball chair! The easy-going staff is attentive, too. This is the Shanghai Restaurant— family-run.

More than 30 years ago, first owner Alan Kwan, who’s never forgotten his hard-scrabble roots, helped many newcomers learn English, find jobs and fill out tax forms. Of him and wife Nancy, son and co-owner Ed Kwan says, “So poor, but rich in spirit.”

Nowadays, another son and co-owner Don Kwan follows Alan’s cue, reaching out to those on our local fringe. Care to visit Shang’s changing art exhibitions? Hear the live bands? Play weekly bingo? Comic jam? Or the singles’ nights featuring speed dating? Don’t forget karaoke, hosted by China Doll (oh, that mumu and frightful wig!), aka Ed. Of course, there are always pork dumplings and pad Thai. And good wine (By Chadsey’s Cairn).

The three other co-owners, siblings Mabe, Richard and Dave, stoically suffer all these shenanigans.
