Completed in 2010, the Chinatown Gateway — also known as the Royal Arch — stands on Somerset Street West as a distinctive landmark of Ottawa’s Chinatown. It celebrates Chinese Canadian heritage and the community’s contributions to the cultural life of the nation’s capital.

The Gateway was created as a twin-city project between Ottawa and Beijing and also marked the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and China. Its architectural design involved the Beijing Research Institute of Ancient Architecture, while specialists and artisans from Beijing worked alongside Canadian contractors to assemble decorative elements and apply traditional Chinese painting techniques.

Inspired by northern Chinese imperial architecture, the Gateway is built to an exceptionally high traditional standard and is crowned by nine distinctive roofs covered with golden glazed tiles supplied from China. Its elaborate design, richly painted brackets and intricate decorative figures reflect traditional Chinese craftsmanship and symbolize prosperity, health and good fortune.

Among its symbolic details are five coins representing the five precious metals — gold, silver, copper, iron and tin — and five threads in red, yellow, blue, white and black, embedded within the structure. Following Chinese tradition, these elements are said to bring blessings to the people and the land. Dragons, mythical roof figures and stone guardian lions add further layers of cultural meaning, making the Gateway a landmark to be appreciated both from afar and up close.
