 A story of Mekong

Sophistication, style, elegance. In terms of both interior and food, that just about sums up the Mekong. The generously warm Dennis Luc, owner-chef of this almost 30-year-old Szechuan restaurant, obviously prides himself in attention to detail. Take the daily fish special—could be flounder, sea bass or any other. Luc says, “Each morning, I go down to the market and decide on the freshest.” (Try his grouper with  delicate ginger sauce.) Slim Vietnamese spring rolls are subtle, and refined, wrapped in lettuce leaves with basil for a crunchy hot-cold contrast.

As for his vegetables, Luc is one for exploring possibilities. “Every day, I’m learning,” he modestly explains. A simple stir-fried dish of large shiitake caps draped over baby bok choy proves his success. Seven wines (served at correct temperature) come by the glass including a gentle Gewürztraminer from Niagara Peninsula’s Stonechurch.
