The Story of Yee Cheong Tong
Bok choy flower. Astragali root. And an enormous—30 centimetre diameter—chestnut-coloured mushroom called ling zhi. Such plants may be unknown to Westerners. But they’re just a few of the thousand found in Yee Cheong Tong—herbs, fruit and fungi traditionally used for good health in Asia.
Expect expert help from owners Yan Qin Wang and Xiao Hong Cao, both with herbalists in their family—altogether, a father, grandfather and uncle.
High-quality, pesticide-free herbs are harvested in Wang’s own province Guangzhou. Ask Wang or Cao for proper dosage, though. “Too little,” cautions Wang, “and the herb won’t work; too much could spell danger.” Some plants are recognizable. Almonds are good for coughs while saffron helps blood circulation.
Westerners, meanwhile, are catching on. A clinical study has shown that Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, a common formula of 10 herbs that’s been used as medication for thousands of years, has proven effective for improving symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome.
