Winterlude Chinatown’s 2019 special lunar new year celebration

Join Chinatown’s 2019 special Lunar New Year celebration… meet the Kings of Good Fortune accompanied by drummers. Each year at the Lunar New Year, the tradition is to hang a picture of the god for blessings of great luck and large wealth.

Meet the Kings of Good Fortune on Saturday February 16th, 2019 from between 12:30 am and 1:30 pm in Chinatown. Whether in restaurants or stores on the street, the King will give away 2019 lucky red envelopes with his best wishes in Chinatown. Among the 2019 red envelopes there will be 108 special gifts from various Chinatown merchants for the even luckier winners…

Landscaping Story Contest

Ottawa Chinatown BIA is offering $2,000 worth of prizes for creative story writing! Chinatown will soon be undergoing an exciting makeover and installing new street furniture (e.g. benches, litter bins, etc.). The new furniture is designed to represent Asian culture and will display various symbols, such as lanterns, dragons, seasonal flowers, and zodiac signs. For your chance to win, write an original story that describes the meaning behind these symbols and how they came to be. Each winning story will receive a $100 gift certificate. There is no fee and no limit to the number of articles an individual may enter. Please submit each entry separately and include your name, address, phone number, and email address. Your entry should be typed and emailed/delivered to:

Photo Story Contest

Enter for a chance to be 1 of 20 winners. Each winner will receive a $100 gift certificate!

Submit a short story that takes place in Chinatown, and accompany it with a photo to help visually describe the scenario. Your story can be fact or fiction, funny or inspirational. Be creative! Tell us how Chinatown has made an influence on your life. Stories are limited to 150 words and one photo only.

Winterlude Lunar New Year Parade – Celebrate the Year of the Monkey

Be a real Canadian! Celebrate winter while enjoying dim sum or pho and walking along with Chinese lions and zodiac animals in the capital city of Canada! Feb. 14th. Chinese drummers and dance troupes will join the lions to tour from business to business to bring good fortune and to ward off evil spirits in Chinatown – a multicultural village with an Asian flavor!

 Ottawa, Ontario – Somerset Street Chinatown Business Improvement Area (BIA) is excited to partner with Canadian Heritage in 2016 Winterlude for its annual lion dance parade during the lunar new year on Sunday February 14, 2016 starting at 1 pm.

The Chinese Lion Dance goes back over one thousand years. The first record of the performance of an early form of the lion dance dates to the early Qing and Han Dynasties (Third century B.C.).

At the beginning of the lunar New Year in Chinatown, lion dance groups tour from business to business to bring good fortune and to ward off evil spirits.

Come to experience the tradition, hear the fire crackers, and get your New Year good fortune by following the lion dance parade in the Ottawa Chinatown – a multicultural village with an Asian flavour! To celebrate Winterlude in Chinatown, all the zodiacs will come to join the lion dance this year! You would not want to miss this extravaganza!

This year from end of June right until September, come celebrate our  Chinatown FestivAsia. Five locations dotted throughout the neighbourhood will be sites of both performances and workshops. Come celebrate in our Ottawa Chinatown festivities.

Every Saturday afternoon from June 23, 2012 – September 1, performances and workshops will happen in five different places.

 

 

Chinatown Remixed

Chinatown Remixed presents one continuous art gallery in . . . Ottawa’s Chinatown. The sixth annual Art Festival exhibits artwork in unusual & diverse venues — jewelry stores, travel agencies, grocery stores, and cafés. More than 40 artists will show their work in 38 businesses along Somerset Street West. A month-long celebration of art in Chinatown! GRAND OPENING day is Saturday, May 17th, 1:30pm – 5pm. Exhibits continue until June 17th.

This is the first year Chinatown has ever been involved in the Canadian Tulip festival-we have some exciting things to see and fun events with …tulip-themed, of course.
